International Master's Degree Program in Civil and hydraulic Engineering

Program introduction

The civil engineering discipline of Tongji University was first established in 1914. During the evaluation by the Degree Center of MOE in 2009, 2012 and 2016, the civil engineering discipline of Tongji University was ranked the 1st place (or A+) in terms of overall performance in China. In 2017, it was selected into the national "Double first-rate" strategy construction discipline list. Tongji civil engineering has been ranked first in the world for four consecutive years in the “Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU)” from 2017 to 2020.

From 2020, students will be recruited and trained according to the civil and hydraulic engineering category, and train talents with the ability of high-level application and compound engineering technology and engineering management for industrial enterprises, engineering construction departments, engineering design and research institutes of civil and hydraulic engineering.


Application Requirements

  • Language: 80 or above for TOEFL, or 6.0 or above for IELTS, or other certificates which can prove that English is your native language or the working language;

  • College educational background or equivalent, and major in Civil Engineering;

  • Degree certification and academic transcripts. If the documents are not in Chinese or English, the original notarized translated versions must be submitted;

  • A letter of motivation (reasons for applying this program, no less than 800 words);

  • Recommendation letters by two associate professors or professionals of associate professor level.

In addition to the above application materials, the university may require applicant to provide supplementary materials, depending on specific requirements.



Duration for full-time study is 2.5 years, and the maximum duration of the study is 4 years.


Credit requirements

Each master student should complete at least 43 credits, of which no less than 7 credits for public degree courses, no less than 18 credits for professional degree courses, no less than 8 credits for non-degree courses, and 10 credits for compulsory courses.


Degree to be awarded

The student who has fulfilled all the course and thesis requirements will be awarded the master’s degree in civil and hydraulic engineering.
