I. Introduction

The splendid history of School of Foreign Languages (SFL), Tongji University is dated back to 1907 when Department of German was established upon the founding of German Medical School, the predecessor of the university, and is evidenced by its German education which miniatures that of the country. The foreign language education in Tongji, after having experienced more than a century of vicissitude, is blessed with a number of renowned scholars who studied or taught in the school including poet and translator Feng Zhi, writer and philosopher Chen Quan, poet Yin Fu, Germanic scholar Zhang Weilian, German language scholar Liao Fujun, Phoenix TV commentator Qiu Zhenhai, who made outstanding contributions to SFL.

The Linguistics and Applied Linguistics in Foreign Languages program has developed a strong theoretical and practical grounding and a prominent focus that combines formal linguistics and functional linguistics. The program encompasses both theoretical and applied research that covers three main areas including phonetics and phonology, syntax, and semantics as well as a number of linguistics branches and applied research areas such as pragmatics, social linguistics, foreign language teaching, physiology and acoustic phonetics, etc. The multimodal research team ranks the top both domestically and globally for its output and size, and for its unique advantage in aging and language attrition, for which a research center has been established. Abundant research findings that are leading in China have been produced thanks to the thorough knowledge of and in-depth study into western linguistic theories and their application by a faculty who have obtained doctorate degrees and engaged in academic exchange in countries such as UK, US, Australia, and Germany.

II. Objectives

The program aims at training Ph.D. students whose Capabilities to be possessed are: (1) a strong grounding of fundamental theories of foreign languages and linguistics; a systematic knowledge structure; a profound literacy in foreign languages and linguistics; (2) creativity awareness and capability of discovering, analyzing and solving practical problems by employing theories and conducting scientific research independently; (3) law-abiding awareness, rigorous learning and research attitude; teamwork ability and interpersonal and coordination skills; (4) qualification for the employment in institutions of higher education, research institutes and high-level investigation in domestic and multinational corporations and government agencies.

IV. Credit Requirements

Ph.D. students should complete at least 18 credits, including 4 credits for public degree courses, 4 credits for the professional degree courses, 2 credits for the non-degree courses, and 8 credits for the compulsory courses (including 1 credit for dissertation topic selection, 1 credit for the graduate students' academic behavior norms, 2 credits for The Tongji advanced lectures,3 credits for the mid-term assessment and 1 credit for academic reporting conference on the phase achievement of the dissertation.

V. Qualifications

1. Non-Chinese citizen in good health both mentally and physically.

2. Applicants for Ph.D. program should have a Master degree.

3. Applicant must stay in good academic standing.

4. All international students applying from non-English speaking countries should have good English proficiency.

VI. Application Materials

1. Application Form for International Students of Tongji University (2 copies).

2. A photocopy of passport (Personal Information Page).

3. Electronic copy of original graduate certificate and degree certificate. If the certificates are not in Chinese or English, the original notarized translated versions must be submitted.

* The certificates should be notarized by local Chinese Embassy or local Chinese Consulates (or foreign embassies or consulates in China). Degree certificate is required to be verified; and original or notarized documents related to the degree certificate must be submitted at the registration.

4. Electronic copy of original or notarized academic transcripts of the MA program. If the academic transcripts are not in Chinese or English, the electronic copy of original notarized translated document must be submitted.

* The transcript should be notarized by local Chinese Embassy or local Chinese Consulates (or foreign embassies or consulates in China). The original or notarized documents of the transcript must be submitted at the registration.

5. International students from non-English speaking countriesThe electronic copy of language proficiency certificate. TOEFL (minimum 80/120) or IELTS (minimum 6). The certificate should be valid when submitted.  If the applicant does not have IELTS or TOEFL, other proofs that can prove English materials are also acceptable.

6. Original recommendation letters from two professors or associate professors (contact information is necessary).

7. Personal statement. Around 1500 words for doctoral candidates, in English. Study and work experience, academic research achievement, planned research proposal and personal prospect after graduation should be included.

8. Catalogue and abstract of published papers, and other documents that can prove academic ability.
