I、 Brief introduction of MTCSOL From 2016, the International School of Tongji University starts to enroll foreign students majoring in Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) and can offer Confucius Institute Scholarship to excellent foreign students. Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) of Tongji University keeps pace with professional development standards of International Chinese Education. It aims to cultivate specialized teachers who can teach Chinese as a second language by adopting diversified cultivation methods, relying on stable and highly qualified teaching staff and implementing a series of courses based on effective practical platform systems both home and abroad. Duration Graduate 2 years Objectives Students should be equipped with the ability to 1) teach Chinese and Chinese culture in China and other countries; 2) undertake multi-country, multi-type and multi-level teaching tasks; 3) spread Chinese culture in a desirable way. Main courses Core Courses: China Panorama, Advanced Chinese Language, Introduction to International Chinese Education, Second Language Learning Theories and Practices, International Chinese Teaching Cases Analyses and Practice, the Classical Chinese culture, Intercultural Communication, Academic Research and Writing Guide, etc. Optional Courses: Chinese Language Elements Teaching, Skills of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, Chinese Culture and Communication, Traditional Culture and Cultural Presentation, Application of Modern Educational Technology, Teaching Test and Evaluation Design, etc. Learning practice Classroom Observation, Chinese Teaching Practice, HSK Exam Training, Thesis Writing Guide, etc. II、 Graduation and Degree Conferment To get a Master of Arts degree, students must earn a total of 40 credits. They should acquire a certificate of new HSK level-6 (180 scores at a minimum). Additionally, they should pass the oral defense of their dissertations. III、 Eligibility & Admission Scholarship for Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) Students This program provides a sponsorship for two academic years. Applicants must be above 18 years old, non-Chinese citizen in good health. Applicant should have earned a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent, a minimum score of 180 in HSK Test (Level 5), and a minimum score of 50 in HSKK Test (Intermediate Level). Applicants who are able to provide the employment agreement or certification upon finishing the study from designated working institutions are preferred. This program provides a sponsorship for 3 academic years. Above 18 years old, non-Chinese citizen in good health. Applicant should provide the employment agreement from a designated Confucius Institute or a prospective working institution. Applicant should hold a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent, a minimum score of 180 in HSK Test (Level 3), and a minimum score of 60 in HSKK Test (Beginner Level). IV、 Scholarship Coverage, Criteria and Academic Assessment The Confucius Institute Scholarship provides full coverage on tuition fee, accommodation fee, living allowance and comprehensive medical insurance expenses. Tuition fee is under the overall planning and utilization of host institutions to provide teaching, management, Chinese language proficiency tests (HSK/HSKK), and cultural and social activities for scholarship holders. Accommodation fee is under the overall planning and utilization of host institutions which should provide scholarship holders with free dormitory rooms (usually double rooms). For those who live off campus with the permission of host institutions are entitled to accommodation allowance from host institutions by month or by quarter. The allowance criteria are RMB700 per person on monthly basis. Living allowance is granted by the host institutions on a monthly basis. The allowance criteria for MTCSOL students are RMB 3,000 per month per person. Enrollment status is based on the semesters of host institutions. Students who are enrolled before the 15th (or on the 15th) of the admission month, are entitled to the full allowance of that month. Students who are enrolled after the 15th of that month are only entitled to half of the allowance. The living allowance for the month of graduation will be granted half a month after confirming the graduation status by host institutions. During the study, for any students who is absent from China due to personal reasons for more than 15 days (excluding legal holidays), the allowance will be suspended during absence. Allowance will be terminated in case of schooling suspension or dropping out for personal reasons. Comprehensive medical insurance is purchased by the host institutions in accordance to relevant regulations on international students stipulated by the Ministry of Education of China. The insurance fee per person is RMB800 per year. The degree scholarship program applicants are subject to annual academic performance review. Only those who achieve outstanding records in academic and Chinese language proficiency are entitled to a full scholarship for the following year. Those who achieve average academic records are entitled to partial scholarships. The others will not be entitled to scholarship. Partial scholarships consist of tuition fee, accommodation fee and comprehensive medical insurance. Test fee is reimbursed by host institutions. V、 Recruitment Procedures A. For application, please log on to the Confucius Institute Scholarships website (http://cis.chinese.cn) to register, complete the Confucius Institute Scholarships Application Form online, and upload the scanned copies of relevant supporting documents. B. Entrusted by Hanban, Confucius Institutes (independent Confucius Classrooms) in different countries, overseas Chinese language testing centers, educational and cultural sections of the Chinese embassy and consulate, and host institutions in China are working as recommending institutions to engage in the applicant selection, materials review, host institutions connection, and collecting and handing over applicants’ documents to host institutions. C. Once application materials are verified by the Division of Scholarships of Hanban as valid, host institutions will then review the eligibility of applicants and submit the admission list to Hanban. D. Hanban will conduct an overall assessment of all applications and admit applicants on the basis of competitive selection. Normally, the admission results will be announced within 45 working days after the application materials are confirmed as valid. E. After confirming with the successful applicants, host institutions are required to post “Letter of Admission”, “Visa Application Form for Foreigners to Study in China” (JW202 Form), copy of the scholarship certificate and other relevant documents to the recommending institutions within 15 working days. VI、 Application Documents Required Applicants should log onto the Scholarship website & Online Application for International students website(study-info.tongji.edu.cn), fill out the “Confucius Institute Scholarship Application Form with the applicant’s signature”& “Application Form for International Students of Tongji University with the applicant’s signature”, and attach the electronic files of the following materials: A. A photocopy of passport (pages with photo). B. The degree certificate. If the certificate is not in Chinese or English, the original notarized translated versions must be submitted. Certificate of expected graduation issued by education in current academic institution (for applicants who will be graduating in the same year only). Degree certificate is required to be verified and notarized documents must be submitted at the registration. C. Original or notarized academic transcripts. If the academic transcripts are not in Chinese or English, the original notarized translated document must be submitted. * The transcript should be notarized by local Chinese Embassy or local Chinese Consulates (or foreign embassies or consulates in China). D. Recommendation letters from two professors or associate professors, in Chinese or English (signature and contact information are necessary, sealed in envelop). E. Personal statement. Around 1000 words in Chinese. Study and work experience, academic research achievement, planned research proposal should be included, and individual development objective after graduation. F. Catalogue and abstract of published papers, and other documents that can prove academic ability. VII、 More Details A. Please express all the above application materials required to room 205, international school of Tongji University(for the MTCSOL Scholarship applicants only). Application documents will not be returned. The deadline is May 20th. B. Incomplete or unqualified applications will not be processed. C. Applicants will be disqualified from application in case of fraudulent application materials or application materials are completed and submitted by someone else. D. Scholarship winners who cannot register with the host institutions on time should inform the host institution about the reasons in written form within 15 days before the admission date. For those who do not register as requested without reason, the scholarship will be canceled. E.
