Study IP in Shanghai: Turkish student shares her journey

Editor's note: Intellectual property, or IP is a key factor for innovation and development in the modern world. As China celebrates the 50th anniversary of its cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization or WIPO in 2023, it also showcased its achievements and efforts in fostering a culture of IP that respects knowledge, advocates innovation, abides by the law and competes fairly. In this series, we feature the stories of foreign students who are studying IP in Shanghai, one of China's most dynamic and cosmopolitan cities. They share their experiences of living and learning in Shanghai and their insights into the importance and challenges of IP in the global context.

Merve Sena Bozkurt, a Turkish student pursuing a master's degree in IP at the Shanghai International College of Intellectual Property, is fascinated by the city's charm and culture. She hopes to contribute to IP cooperation between Turkey and China in the future.

Bozkurt, who goes by the Chinese name Si Na, has visited many cities in China, but she finds Shanghai special. "Shanghai is an international city, with a unique blend of history and modernity. You can see both ancient buildings and skyscrapers here," she said.

Bozkurt enjoys the friendly and lively atmosphere in Shanghai and has made many friends there. "My Chinese classmates are very hardworking and enthusiastic. They have helped me a lot in learning and adapting to Chinese culture," she said.

Bozkurt has a strong interest and background in IP. Before coming to China, she interned at a law firm that specialized in IP for a year, gaining practical experience in the field. Later, she obtained a master's degree in law from TOBB University in Turkey and wrote her thesis on the protection of artificial intelligence systems under IP law.

Bozkurt is passionate about IP law, as she believes that it is a constantly evolving field and that the protection and enforcement of IP are essential for fostering innovation, creation and economic growth at both individual and national levels. She is also curious about the challenges and opportunities that emerge in the global IP field.

Bozkurt is eager to promote cooperation between Turkey and China in the area of endeavor and hopes to use her education and experience to achieve this goal in the future.
