I. Introduction
1.Purpose and requirement
In response to the Belt and Road Initiative, Tongji University, in collaboration with the Bank of China, establishes the “Tongji University & Bank of China Global Talent Scholarship”, aiming to attract outstanding international students from Europe and countries along the Belt and Road Routes in pursuit of further education at Tongji University. Combining our globalized platform and the strengths of business internalization of the Bank of China, we endeavor to produce graduates with global perspective and innovative mindset, and seek to enhance substantive cooperation and exchanges with top-notch universities and academic institutions around the globe for the promotion of collaborative innovation at the international level.
The Scholarship shall be exclusively rewarded to international candidates for the PhD programs at TJU. Awardees must complete the curricula approved by the Academic Board as well as the required research work, and fully meet the requirements of the PhD study plans.
2. Major
There is no major restriction for the Scholarship application. Supervisors who are qualified to recruit Chinese PhD students and have the corresponding foreign language ability are eligible for admitting our scholarship candidates.
II. Eligibility for Application
Applicants shall have completed their postgraduate studies and be able to complete the learning tasks for doctoral studies with the potential to engage in scientific research and teaching. Applicants shall meet the following requirements:
1. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens in good health at the age of 40 or under;
2. Applicants must finish their bachelor and master study in a well-known foreign academic institution or a Double-First Class university in China;
3. Applicants should have finished master study and have got the master degree.
4. Applicants should have a good academic performance with an average grade no less than 85 or GPA no less than 3.8.
5. Applicants should show excellent research capability and potential for future development. Having published articles in SCI, EI, SSCI, A&HCI, CSSCI or other top-ranked academic journals, or having participated in major scientific research projects during their postgraduate studies are required.
6. Applicants should receive no other scholarship or funding from Chinese government or universities.
7. Applicants should have good language ability. For detailed information of language ability, please refer to the requirements of application materials.
III. Application Time
For Spring 2025 (February/March) admission, the application period is November 1, 2024 - November 30, 2024
IV. Application Procedures
1. Please refer to https://study.tongji.edu.cn/lxsq/xwxm_zwsk.htm for information about the enrollment of Tongji University.
2. Contact the supervisor of your field and fill in the “Application Form of Tongji University & Bank of China Global Talent Scholarship”. Send the form, together with the other application materials, to your supervisor by e-mail. The documents with the supervisor’s opinion on the application form will be returned to the applicant later.
3. Log in Tongji University Online Application System (http://study-info.tongji.edu.cn) to upload all the application materials (see the next section). If you have successfully reached here, you have completed the application procedures.
V. Application Materials
Note: In the application time, you just need to upload the electronic application materials in the application system. After admission, please bring the original paper application materials for verification when you report to the university. If you fail to submit the materials or the materials do not meet the requirements, your application will be rejected.

2. Personal information page of your passport (with at least 6 months’ validity);
3. Master's graduation certificate and degree certificate;
For a certificate in a language other than Chinese and English, the original notarized copy of the Chinese or English translation must be provided. The notarized copy must be issued by a Chinese embassy or consulate abroad, or a foreign embassy or consulate in China;
The original pre-graduation certificate issued by the school of a new graduate needs to be provided. Upon admission, you need to bring the original graduation certificate for verification during registration;
4. Original or notarized transcripts of all courses in the master's degree.
For a transcript in a language other than Chinese and English, the original notarized copy of the Chinese or English translation must be provided. The notarized copy must be issued by a Chinese embassy or consulate abroad, or a foreign embassy or consulate in China;
5. Language proficiency documents
For Chinese-taught programs:
Certificate of HSK Level 5 (total score ≥ 180) or above
(If your master's degree was taught in Chinese, the certificate of teaching in Chinese is required and the HSK certificate is not required.)
For English-taught programs:
If the applicant is from a non-English-speaking country, the applicant should provide documents of his/her English proficiency.
If the applicant’s master program is taught in English, the applicant is not required to provide an official English proficiency certificate but has to hand in the certificate for English-taught degree program. Otherwise, the applicant should submit a valid official English transcript. Applicants may choose to take one of the following official English tests: TOEFL or IELTS. The transcript shall be the applicant's test result within two years prior to the date of application. Under special circumstances, the committee may consider no requirement for English certification materials if the supervisor contacted by the applicant give a strong recommendation.
6. Original recommendation letters from two professors or associate professors (contact information is necessary).
7. Personal statement
Please write the introduction according to the personal statement template (postgraduate) in the teaching language of the professional program (for example, the statement for a program taught in Chinese should be written in Chinese, and the statement for a program taught in English should be written in English).
8. Physical examination form for foreigners issued within the last 6 months or valid Chinese visa.
9. Payment evidence
If the applicant pays the application fee through bank or online bank, it is required to provide a photo of receipt or screenshot of transaction.
No requirement for those who pay through the online application system.
10. Other application materials
Examples include acceptance letter for international student, award certificates, and admission notices of other universities.
We may require applicants to provide additional materials if necessary.
All application materials must be uploaded when applying online, and materials without corresponding items should be uploaded to the “Supplementary Materials” column.Failure to submit application materials that meet the above requirements within the specified time frame will be considered as an unsuccessful application.
VI. Tuition, Living Expenses, Accommodation and Insurance
1. Tuition
Tongji University will waive the tuition (45,000 yuan annually) once the applicant is awarded with the Scholarship.
2.Living expenses
Living expenses for international doctoral students: 5000 yuan per month, 12 times a year
3.Accommodation
On-campus accommodation is provided free of charge; if the on-campus accommodation is full, you have to arrange off-campus accommodation on your own. If applying for off-campus accommodation, you are entitled to an accommodation subsidy of 3,000 yuan per month.
4.Insurance
Each awardee is entitled to the waiver of comprehensive medical insurance and major diseases and accidents insurance, which would have cost 800 yuan per year.
5.Dissertation supervision fees
After your completion of the whole stage of the study and graduation from the University, we will provide a one-off lump sum of dissertation supervision fee (5,000 yuan) to your supervisor.
6.International travel fees
After your completion of the whole stage of the study and graduation from the University, we will offer a one-off lump sum of international travel fee (12,000 yuan) to you.
VII. Admission and Registration
1. Tongji University adopts a material review system for admission and organizes written examinations or interviews for each college. We perform evaluations according to the overall capabilities of the students and select the best candidates for admission.
2. After submitting the application, the applicant must regularly check the information and application status in the application system and complete each step strictly as prompted. If the follow-up process is delayed due to failure to check a notification in time, the applicant is responsible for the delay.
3. Please pay attention to your application status in the application system. If you are admitted, your application status will change to admitted. The admission notification and related materials will be sent after two weeks.
4. You can visit the “Orientation” column of the school website for admission instructions. Accepted candidates must go to a Chinese embassy (consulate) abroad to apply for a study visa, with their passport, Tongji University Admission Notice, and the Visa Application Form for Foreign Students Studying in China (JW202). Besides, the candidates must take the above-mentioned materials and go to Tongji University to apply for admission at the time specified in the notice, and apply for a residence certificate in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Exit-Entry Administration Bureau of Shanghai Public Security Bureau.
VIII. Other Information
For scholarship winners:
1. You shall register on time. Those who are late for register without permission will be expelled and the scholarship will be cancelled.
2. You shall attend the annual review of the scholarship qualification. The scholarship will be suspended or cancelled for those who fail in the review.
3. Normally, the major and study period cannot be changed.
